I need to use the symbol for the word "therefore" - it is the symbol that has three dots arranged as a triangle - how do i do this in InDesign ?

In Microsoft Word, I can do this form Insert-Symbol- pick the symbol font and pick the "therefore" symbol - but how do i do this in InDesign CS2 ? -

    thanks

Pretty much the same. Type > Glyphs

Set the Glyphs panel to use the Symbol font and you will find your therefore sign 6 rows down and 15 columns across.

....if your glyphs panel happens to be sized the same as Ken's. I don't even HAVE 15 columns showing.

I wouldn't worry too much about the row/column numbers. Just scroll through until you find it.

thanks ken - that worked !

    another related question

Inserting special characters from the glyph panel is a pain if one has to insert these characters frequently - is there any shortcut that i can use (say alt+x=therefore symbol ) so that when i am typing in my document, i can place these special characters quickly without detourining into the glyph panel everytime ?

    thanks

Not really. The glyphs panel will show you the Unicode value, but I can't remember how - if at all - one enters Unicode
through the keyboard. You could find the Alt+ value by trial and error. But in any event, you would still have to keep
switching your font to Symbol when you enter the code, so you might as well just keep the glyphs panel open. You can
reduce its size to show the recently used glyphs - and a couple more rows.

What I would be inclined to do would be to put a nonesense character in in place of the therefore character (something
like ~~~) and then do a find/replace to change ~~~ to the therefore character pasted in from the glyphs palette.
Remember to change the font to Symbol in the replace dialogue.

You can also add it to a glyph set. Glyph sets can hold glyphs you regularly use from multiple different fonts (and can be set to remember the font or not) and can be shared.

That's still not as fast a keyboard shortcut, but it's quicker than the whole rigamarole. Find/change, though, would probably be my first choice, too, if there is more than one instance.
