Why do some fonts do not show up correctly in some PDF files?

  1. Default Why do some fonts do not show up correctly in some PDF files?

I am using Acrobat 8 with Windows XP Pro in 2 separate computers. In one computer everything works fine. In another one, some documents display a wrong alignment of some italics fonts (characters are smaller and look like subscripts). This especially happens with Times New Roman italics.
With the previous version of Acrobat on the same PC, no problems were encountered.
If I create myself a PDF document, I encounter no problems.

    Any clues?

Do you have "use local fonts" selected? Are the fonts embedded?

  3. Default Re: Why do some fonts do not show up correctly in some PDF files?

Yes, "Use local fonts" is selected (in both installations).
How do I check if the fonts are embedded?

  4. Default Re: Why do some fonts do not show up correctly in some PDF files?

Font check: ctrl-D, font tab (should say embedded in parentheses and possibly subset).

If it is not displaying correctly, try unchecking use local fonts.

  5. Default Re: Why do some fonts do not show up correctly in some PDF files?

    - In the documents that do not show up correctly, the fonts are NOT embedded

    - In the documents that do display correctly, the fonts result as "Embedded Subset"

    - Unchecking "Use local fonts" produces no improvements.

    Any more clues?

The problem is then that you have PDFs without fonts embedded and Acrobat is simply making a best guess as to what should be reasonable. The only way to avoid this problem is to be sure that all fonts are embedded. It took me some time a few years back to convince some other folks about fonts and created viewed their document in both Acrobat and GhostView. In Acrobat it looked fine (use the Adobe fonts basically), but it was a bunch of bitmap garbage in GhostView. It was readable, but not acceptable.

There is not much you can do to improve the results unless you install the same exact font they are using. It might be simpler to tell them that their documents look pitiful to others because the fonts are not embedded and send them a screen capture to make your point. Then explain to them that if they are using Acrobat, they should use the Press or Print settings to embed fonts and check the settings to be sure all are embedded. It may actually be that someone is using an old version of ps2pdf to create the PDF (You can find that information in the metadata under the ctrl-D document properties menu) and you are seeing bitmap fonts. The bitmap fonts are a bit unusual anymore, but used to be common with LaTeX. They looked find when printed, but were terrible when scaled for screen viewing.

If you can post the PDF somewhere, maybe some of us can make further comments.

Thanks for the explanation Bill. I will be more than happy to post the PDF files, just let me know the place it is more convenient for you guys.

Just let me further clarify some more issues (maybe they can be of some help to you).

    - I am not talking about ONE specific document; mostly (although not exclusively) theee documents are the PDF version of papers published by international scientific journals (they are automatically created by the publisher).

    - With the previous release of Acrobat installed on the same computer, I had no problems with the same PDF files. This is the thing that looks most strange to me, bacause it seems to indicate that the problem is not related to the fonts that are installed in my computer (unless unistalling Acrobat 7 caused some fonts to be erased).

    - With the same version of Acrobat on a different PC (under the same operating system), I have no problems in reading the files.

There is a knowledgebase article about fonts and AA7. There are 4 fonts in AA7 that need to be removed due to a substitution error. I could not convince one guy 2 years ago to be sure fonts were embedded in the conference program, but he was a LaTeX jock and felt he knew better. As a result, all of the titles in the conference list appeared as Greek (they were actually English). Removing the specific fonts in AA7 made them appear correctly.

Most publishers who use PDFs require ALL fonts to be embedded for this type of reason, as well as folks using different PDF viewers and operating systems. That makes me surprised that your publishers do not do that (IEEE does).

Bottom line with AA7, try to find the knowledgebase article about what fonts to remove. I have a link somewhere, but could not find it - maybe on my machine with AA7!

The publisher I am speaking about is Elsevier, but I have found the same problem also in publications from the American Chemical Society.

Indeed, before writing to this forum I searched the knowledgebased articles, but could not locate anything exactly related to the problem I am having...
Note however that I am using AA8, not AA7. And actually, with AA7 the font problem did not show up.
But after your last message I can remember that when I installed AA7 some years ago I had the same problem, and indeed they told me to substitute some fonts, which fixed the problem. However, I really do not remember which fonts they were.

I have checked the /WINDOWS/FONTS folder, and the fonts contained therein are exactly the same I have in the PC where no problems are displayed with the same Acrobat version.

Darn it. When I read your post before the last round, I was sure you said AA7. I don't remember any such aspects with AA8. In any case, it is likely related directly to the fonts not being embedded. I assume that both machines show the same fonts being used for viewing in the font list you found. As an experiment, you might want to print the good version to a new file using Print or Press settings to embed all of the fonts. Then check that file out on the other machine. This is more an interest item, but may give some insight into the problem. There are other techniques for embedding fonts, but this one is quick.
